Male Sterilisation, also known as a vasectomy, is a permanent surgical contraceptive method. It involves cutting the tubes that carry sperm from the testes to the penis during ejaculation in a procedure that is done under local anesthetic. Since it is permanent and highly effective, it is an option for those who never want to have children, or who don't wish to have any more.

After the procedure, the man can still ejaculate, but the seminal fluid will not contain any sperm. Sterilisation will only affect the man's fertility, and not his libido or his ability to have sex, but it's important to consult a doctor or nurse before making a decision. They will help you weigh up the benefits and risks, and advise you on alternative long-acting methods of contraception. After sterilisation, the man will need to wait for confirmation that the procedure has worked and this can take several months. In the mean time, regular contraception must be used to prevent an unplanned pregnancy. It is possible to reverse a vasectomy, but the procedure is very complex, so there are no guarantees.

The Hor­monal Coil is a small, soft T-shaped plas­tic frame that re­leases low lev­els of a prog­estin hor­mone for up to 3 to 6 years. It is given with a pre­scrip­tion and placed in your womb by a doc­tor or nurse.

COCPs are tablets which may have to be taken every day, releasing the hormones oestrogen and progestogen to prevent pregnancy. They are often referred to as the Pill and you will need a prescription from your healthcare professional for these.

POPs are tablets which have to be taken every day at the same time with no break between packs. These pills only contain a progestogen hormone so they can be taken by women for whom oestrogen-containing options are not suitable.
